The Ministry of External Affairs has rolled out significant updates to the Indian passport system starting from February 2026. These include the introduction of the ePassport with a biometric chip, stricter photo compliance rules, and the new PSP 2.0 (Passport Seva Program 2.0) digital platform.
ePassport — What Is It?

New Strict Photo Rules (From Feb 2026)
Passport photos must now meet full ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards. Non-compliant photos result in application rejection — no second chance at the counter:
- 1White or off-white plain background only
- 2Full face visible — no hats, glasses, or headbands (except religious)
- 3Eyes open and looking directly at camera
- 4Neutral expression — no smiling
- 5Photo taken within last 6 months
- 6Size: 35mm x 45mm
- 7High resolution print — no pixelation or shadows on face
PSP 2.0 — New Online System

Passport Processing Times 2026
- 1Normal (36 working days): ₹1,500 for fresh, ₹1,500 for re-issue
- 2Tatkal (3 working days): ₹3,000 additional charge
- 3Police verification may add 2–4 weeks for fresh passports
- 4Minor applicants: Same process, parents must be present
Important Tips for Renewal/Fresh Application
- 1Book appointment online at passportindia.gov.in
- 2Carry original Aadhaar, PAN, and birth certificate
- 3Photos must be new and ICAO-compliant — don't reuse old photos
- 4Name/address changes require additional documents
- 5Lost passport: File FIR first, then apply at nearest PSK
